I am a linguist interested in the interplay between language, cognition, and discourse. In my research I draw from the areas of pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and stylistics in order to address questions related to figurative meaning and, in particular, metaphors. Relevant to this is my work on metaphorical expressions that conceptualize time in a subjective way (e.g. "Minutes were passing slowly as we were waiting to hear about the missing people"), as well as metaphors that are aimed to express emotional pain over the experience of miscarriage and/or pregnancy loss (e.g., "Now I feel like a piece of my heart has been ripped out and that our family is not complete"). My aim is to approach metaphorical meaning as a window into the human mind. To this end, my research incorporates findings from other disciplines too, such as the affective sciences, social and cognitive psychology, and the philosophy of embodied cognition. In this sense, my work pertains to L&M Zurich and is hoped to benefit, but also contribute to, its interdisciplinary scope and objectives.
