With a background in comparative linguistics, I have always been interested in languages in contact both linguistically and in sociolinguistic contexts. My current areas of research include language use in specific domains, language and migration and language and access to public services, including access to health. With regards to language and health, I am interested in the role of language in healthcare access and how communication is navigated between health personnel and health seekers who may not share a common language. In this regard, I consider the effects of language barriers on healthcare access and well as strategies used in such situations and perceptions of both health seekers and health workers with regards to health outcomes in such situations. Lastly, I am interested in the analyses of interactions among health personnel and health seekers. I have been teaching communication skills to pharmacists as part of a DPharm programme for the past two years.
