I am a PhD candidate at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. In my dissertation, I investigate how diglossia and multilingualism are managed in Swiss German-speaking hospitals, particularly when the interlocutors do not share the same first language.
My research focuses on communicational settings in the field of anesthesiology. I record and study anesthesia consultation interactions and observe conversations between medical staff and between medical staff and patients in operating theaters, emergency rooms, and anesthesiology workplaces across different hospitals in German-speaking Switzerland.
The study examines how Swiss German, Standard German, and additional languages are used in hospital interactions, with a special focus on the simultaneous use of dialect and standard language (diglossia) as well as the lived multilingualism within a multicultural society like Switzerland. The aim of my research is to identify communication challenges, develop strategies for effective and safe communication, and document and analyze existing best-practice examples.
