Susanne Wegener wins the Stern-Gattiker-Price

A lack of role models can put the brakes on professional careers; this also applies to academic medicine and especially to women. But they do exist, these female role models, and the SAMS Stern-Gattiker Award is dedicated to them. In 2022, it will go to Vanessa Banz (Bern) and Susanne Wegener (Zurich).

The two award winners have two very different, and in each case very impressive, careers in academic medicine. Both succeed in inspiring young colleagues for their field and exemplify an academic career that successfully combines family and professional life.

PD Dr. Vanessa Banz is the senior physician for visceral and transplant surgery at the Inselspital Bern, a field in which women are particularly underrepresented. In addition to the challenging clinical and scientific work in transplant surgery, she shows an impressive commitment to promoting younger staff members. The numerous voices on her nomination paint a convincing picture as a female "role model", both professionally and personally.

Prof. Susanne Wegener is a senior physician at the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Zurich and holds an SNF professorship at the University of Zurich. Her work in stroke research - clinical and basic research - is impressive. Her academic and professional commitment in the CAS "Sex and Gender specific Medicine" and as a founding member of the "Women in Neurology" of the Swiss Neurological Society are proof of her activity beyond the clinical-scientific field.
