Usha Goswami is Professor of Cognitive Developmental Neuroscience and Director of the Centre for Neuroscience in Education at the University of Cambridge. Her research addresses the relations between phonology and reading development, with particular attention to the roles of rhyme, rhythm, and analogy in reading acquisition and to rhythm processing in children with dyslexia and in deaf children. Much of this work is cross-linguistic and combines behavioural, acoustic, and neuroimaging methods, including studies of auditory temporal processing deficits and of the neural networks underlying reading. A central contribution is the analysis of the amplitude modulation structure of the speech signal and its consequences for phonological and morphological development, formalised in the spectral amplitude modulation phase hierarchy framework. Ongoing projects examine rhythmic sensitivity from infancy onwards and the development of assistive listening technology for dyslexia. She was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2021 and of the British Academy in 2013, and her awards include the Yidan Prize and a CBE.
