  • Human-Centered Health AI Research Group
  • Idiap Research Institute

Janna Hastings is Senior Research Scientist at the Idiap Research Institute, where she leads the Human-Centered Health AI research group. She holds a PhD in computational biology from the University of Cambridge, with additional degrees in computer science and philosophy, and held postdoctoral positions at EPFL, University College London, and Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg before serving as Assistant Professor of Medical Knowledge and Decision Support at the University of Zurich and the University of St. Gallen. Her research develops hybrid AI methods that combine knowledge representation and reasoning with large-scale data-driven models, organised around three themes: AI for biomolecules, AI for evidence, and AI for humans in society. Application areas include scientific evidence synthesis, biomolecular analysis, clinical decision support, and the interpretability and alignment of knowledge in support of reproducible and responsible AI. Current projects include GALENOS, a Wellcome Trust initiative on living evidence synthesis in mental health, and the SNSF-funded projects MetaboLinkAI and StrOntEx.
