Sonja Kotz holds the Chair in Neuropsychology and Translational Cognitive Neuroscience at Maastricht University, where she directs the Basic and Applied NeuroDynamics (BAND) Lab. Her research examines how predictive cues, in particular temporal, formal, and emotional ones, facilitate the perception of speech, language, communication, and music in healthy and clinical populations. A central focus lies on the fronto-striatal and cortico-cerebellar circuits that support timing, rhythm, and multimodal integration, investigated through M/EEG, 3T and 7T MRI, TMS, lesion-symptom mapping, and animal models. This work extends into translational applications, including deep brain stimulation, rhythmic cueing, and gaming-based interventions for Parkinson's disease, subcortical stroke, tinnitus, and first-incidence psychosis. She is a former President of the Society for the Neurobiology of Language and of the European Society for Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, and serves on the scientific advisory boards of several European research institutes.
